When Imran Khan Spoke About His 'Struggles' During His Troubling Marriage with Avantika Malik: "It’s Heartbreaking"
Bollywood star Imran Khan has made a surprising return to the film world, appearing in a cameo for the movie Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which is directed by his close friend Vir Das. He shared that his participation was motivated by his genuine affection for the project, the enjoyment it brought him, and a hint of FOMO—fear of missing out. Recently, Imran has opened up about his personal life, specifically addressing how his marriage to ex-wife Avantika Malik turned “unhealthy,” and how it began to impact their daughter, Imara.
In a candid interview, Imran Khan discussed the challenges he faced during their separation, noting that while it was a difficult period, it ultimately allowed him to prioritize his health and become a more attentive parent. "It is painful, but as painful as separation can be… and it truly affects both partners, the child, and the families involved," he expressed to The Indian Express. He further articulated the need for change, stating, "It's still better than maintaining an unhealthy dynamic. While divorce is undoubtedly unpleasant, it can be healthier to part ways rather than stay in a toxic situation, especially when it sets a poor example for your child. By doing so, you risk instilling unhealthy patterns and dynamics in their understanding of relationships."
The actor, known for his role in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, reflected on how the negative atmosphere of his relationship was taking a toll on his well-being. "Recognizing and understanding this reality was crucial in my decision to end my marriage. I realized this was not a healthy environment. If I continued in this detrimental pattern, it would not benefit me, her, or our child," he explained.
Currently, Imran is enjoying a stable and fulfilling relationship with his girlfriend, Lekha Washington. He emphasized that his breakup with Avantika was a necessary step for his health and happiness. "The choice I made has been overwhelmingly validated. Over the past seven years since our separation, my personal, emotional, and mental health have greatly improved," he noted.
Looking back at his former self, Imran reflected, "When I review old photos from the last years of my marriage, I see someone who appears to be suffering from a serious health issue. So, in the end, this decision has proven to be beneficial."
Imran Khan and Avantika Malik tied the knot on January 10, 2011, after several years of dating. They welcomed their daughter, Imara, on June 9, 2014, before eventually separating in 2019.
